The Toronto Star carries this surpise news from the University of Toronto that they are going to start charging non-U of T users (faculty, grad students... from other universities) for use of their libraries. This is quite disturbing as it contravenes the Canadian University Recipricol Borrowing Agreement that dates back tp 2002. I also find it interesting in light of the recent attempts by the U of T and a few other Canadian universities to get themselves recognized as the primary research institutions in the country. Perhaps this little news item is a sortie in their greater battle plan: "See, if you gave us more research money we could afford to let the riff raff from other universities into our hallowed halls" (As long as they wipe their feet first and don't steal the silverware)
